Hi everyone, I ordered HM's tok upper about 2 weeks ago now and I cant wait until its ready so i can start playing with it!
In the mean time, i have been thinking about custom loads for the 7.62x25 round that would be better optimized for the 16" barrel that im getting with my upper.
I'm totally new to reloading, but have been doing some research to see what people have been doing, then I saw that HMC710 had already made something which looked like a killer load: 10 gr of AA#9 w/110gr SP. This sounds like a pretty potent load, has this been chronoed? i would love to see the numbers on it!

I just got back into reloading for the 7.62 Tok. I don't know if you want to use lead bullets but I did some using 115 grain lead bullets and 8.5 grains of AA#9, CCI small rifle primer, COL of 1.36". They work great in my HM upper and as accurate as commercial Sellier&Bellott Tok ammo. The next step I want to try is Rainier lead safe plated bullets. Midway has 500 of the 110 grain bullets for $46 plus S/H. www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=1050393392

Are you guys using 308 or .312 bullets? I was looking at a lot of loads where they were i thought they were loading .312 bullets that were designed for .32 cal guns...
btw, it looks like Rainier bullets are on backorder.
Now, i don't know a lot about reloading, but would it be possible or of any benefit to use a rifle powder? Seems like that could help with a barrel thats 4x longer than a pistol barrel.

I didn't notice the rainier bullets being on backorder -- darn.
I use .308" copper jacket bullets and .309" lead bullets. I believe the barrels used in most Tok AR-15 barrels are the .308 type.
I would not get into any powders slower than W296 or H110. The best thing to do is look for pet loads from other Tok AR shooters. That load you got from HMC710 is a nice working load and the 110gr bullet is a good weight for the tok carbine. There are a lot or Tok carbine owners that are trying different weight bullets, especially heavier bullets. I liked the 125gr and 150gr bullets for target work. Sorry but I can't find my notes on what the power charge was that I used.

I was thinking that the tok would be a .311 dia bullet like the russian rifles are. So i used my caliper to measure some of the bullets on the Yugo and Romanian surplus 7.62x25 ammo i have, and i was shocked to learn that the Yugo was about .306 and the Romanian about .307. So it would seem that .308 dia bullets would be the ones to use... barrel permitting. Kinda stinks that we cant use all those neat .32acp bullets out there.

All our barrles are 1:10 twist .308 dia. Have been playing with a new system to check the operational limits of the gas system and have run 200 gr at 1020 (my chrono) and 125's at Ismellbs fps, again, my chrono. The system is still in the development stage and have been concentrating on the customers who want the real heavy stuff running subs. The hi vel side has just been a bonus. I can't wait to get my order of 85's.....

OK, just how fast is "I smell bs" fps? In your new setup -- is there a difference in the position of the gas port?

Gas port is std pistol length. Makes it easier for the DIY guys out there so they don't have to mess with cutting gas tubes. I'll publish load data when I get the 85's here and check them out along with the 200+ gr'ers. I wanted this to be as simple of a build as possible and it is starting to come together. So, how fast was fast? 125 gr spitzer, 11" pistol brl..... or maybe

Darn, back to the pistol length! That's what my first 7.62 Tok carbine was. Ran like a champ on hand loads.

Hand loads are so much cleaner but it sure is hard to beat the surplus price...... 85gr and 200 gr cast mold should be here tomorrow w/testing to follow hopefully this weekend. I'll check my notes on the 10gr of AA#9 / 110 gr SP load. I thought is was in the 1600 fps range but I'll have to look. QL shows 1749 fps and 36728 psi, which is over the 34k listed max. The Lee load book has loads in the 41ksi range With the variation in surplus rounds, always work your way up.

Got the 85 gr Sierra RN in yesterday. Light was too low by the time I chrono'd.... Set up again this morning: 1850 fps 1920 fps 1990 fps 2050 pfs ;D I'll get pics up tomorrow, this also needs to be in a different thread......

I have not tried the AA#9 yet....but ran a bunch of 85s and 110FMJ using alliant 2400 and 3n38. got up to 2000fps with the 3n38 and it just start to slightly flatten the primers with that load.
On the heavier stuff, I am finding a couple hundred FPS difference from what I am shooting, and what quickloads was saying I should be shooting. we will see if that is still the same with the Lil'gun powder (I had been using 3n38 for the heavier stuff for the first round of testing).
I do love quickload though....I am using it to dial in just were I need to be for my port pressures. that will be the biggest factor for me choosing a powder since my gas port is a little futher out then HMCs.

Quick Load is pretty cool and just like any data base, one size does not fit all & GI=GO. When I was doing workups for the 50 Beo I called Ed Dillon and he told me how to "tweak" things a bit. QL tries to do everything, but internal ballistics is different for straight wall and sub loads, according to Ed. He said on straight wall cases change the Weighing Factor to .5 on the cartridge dim side. On the tmag case, I got it to duplicate my chrono by adjusting the seating depth down in QL. Will try it again with the initial shot pressure. Another comment Ed made was "......and most chronos are calibrated high. Speed sells." Another REALLY COOL feature of QL that I learned from Marty.... In the upper Tool Bar there is a 1,,, 2,,, 3,,, box. Open that tool bar and it lets you put in search parameters for your case. If you want powders to fill capacity, hit a velocity, or a pressure, just punch in the numbers and it will list powders and charges. Very Cool, thanks Marty (and QL)

yes, I have done the searching for powders. another aspect of it I am using is the the chamber pressure graph. once it shows up, you can use one of the pull down menus and have it show the pressure at the base of the projectile. this then will let you see your port pressure. I am using it to see just where I need to be on my port pressures.

ooohhhh....going to go try that tip on the Beowulf right now.........
now if your changing your seating depth, wont that change what it shows for pressure and case capacity availible for powder?
