I'm experimenting with reloading using HP-38 that I have for other calibers, but the loads I've come across are all over the map. I'm using Hornady hollow point (85 gr, from memory) bullets. Anyone have any favorite recipes? I also want to try Hornady 100 gr semi-jacketed. Any advice on that?
Many thanks in advance. -=[ Bill ]=-

Most of my loads are for the AR, but I think 5-7gr load of Unique was used for the TT33 I had yrs ago... You might want to slug your barrel and try some cast boolits sized to fit.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using .308 and .309 commercial bullets. The initial 4+ gr (Hodgdon recommended) loads I first tried were too light, so I'm in the 5 gr+ range now, and walking up slowly. The Lee recommended loads (included with the die set) are for a powder I'm not familiar with. If I get ambitious (and caffeine overloaded) I may try to extrapolate pressure from published data, but I doubt that will happen soon. I have the feeling PPU loads their rounds hot, but again it's subjective. I may break down a couple of their rounds and see what their load is.
I haven't tried the new loads at the range yet, but I'll post results as I go along in the hope it might help someone else.

I finally got to the range. My Tok seemed happiest with 5.1 gr of HP-38 with an 85 gr FMJ. I also tried 5.5 gr and noticed no real difference. There were a couple of FTF problems with JHP: I need to refine my seating depth/OAL and try again. Brass was a mix of new Starline and mixed commercial once fired. CCI primers.

Good Deal. How does it shoot?

Decent recoil; fairly accurate. Doesn't "slam" the slide like PPU and RAS (the recoil spring is stock). I have some 100 gr bullets I want to try next time as well. I'll update after the next test round.
Of course, any advice would be appreciated at this stage.

I also installed an aftermarket hard rubber grip I bought on Ebay for ~$30. It improved pointing characteristics noticeably. I fired 75 rds of PPU without incident, but I noticed one very hot round (large fireball visible in daylight). THAT's why I handload as a rule.
Next range trip/load experiment to come soon, with report. BTW, I now refer to the M57 as my "fun gun" - she attracts a lot of favorable attention at the range.

Next experiment was yesterday. Loads (all using new Star brass and 5.6 gr of HP-38):
85 gr. PPU JHP: good; fairly accurate 100 gr Hornady SJ: Surprisingly accurate and mild recoil.
I think I found my go-to recipes.
Enjoy!

Good Deal beo!
I shoot the crap out of the 100gr SJ's in the M1 Carbine units.
