Houston, we have lift off. ;D L-R 10mm, 357SS, 9x23Win, 7.62x25 Re-configured barrel for a pistol gas system after changing my mind about using the Tok Gas system for testing. Using Quick Design to stretch the .357 Sig case to .990" and import it back into Quick Load showed there was plenty of power available so I switched from the Tok to a Pistol gas system. Starting with 15 gr of 2400 and 115 gr JHP got 1933 fps average from the 16" barrel. Bumping up to 17 gr of 2400, we hit 2158 fps. QL predicted 2188 fps. Seating to 1.28" oal would fit in a 1911 mag but I seated most of them back out to 1.380" - 1.390" , especially when I went up to 17 gr, to Tok mag length. Feeding was from a stock Tok Mag and adapter. I did not do any mag dumps, just 5 at a time, so don't know how the Tok mag will feed when loaded fully. Did not have any heavier bullets to try either, but would like to see what the 147's do. I don't think they had 2100 fps in mind with the 115gr JHP's ! QL predicts 1944 fps. Looking over the 9x25 Dillon, it's basically the same thing, but without actually getting the dies etc and trying it, can't say they are directly interchangeable. Sure looks like it tho. It might be worth it just for reloading to make sure the shoulder isn't moved during sizing. Forming the cases was pretty easy. FL size in the 10mm die, adjust the 357Sig die to give the same neck on the 357SS and go to town. The 357SS / 9x25 Dillon is pretty impressive. If you are already reloading the 357Sig, it would be a nice round to add to the stable. I would like to do some side by side testing with this and the 9x23, another impressive round. And now for a report on the 10mm Magnum based 357 SS Magnum, here's GW......

A 115gr bullet at 2158fps come out to 1,189 foot-pounds of energy. Impressive round and it works from a PPS-43 magazine. If I remember correctly the 10mm case is straight sided -- when you reform to 357SS does the reforming add any angle to the case sides or does the main body stay straight? The reason I ask is I believe the straight sided cartridge cases seem to stack real nice in a double stack magazine. Did you get any signes of over pressure on the primers when you were getting 2158fps?

The prints show the 10mm with a slight taper from .426 to .421 and the Sig a straight .424" The Dillon shows a slight taper like the 10mm. They will fit a 1911 10mm mag just fine when seated deeper. Anything that runs a 10mm should be able to run this one. I did a search on gunbroker.com for the 9x25 Dillon and got no hits tho. Close to compressing the charge so seating depth and pressures need to be watched. No signs of over pressure with the 17gr of 2400 and I would call it a lightly compressed load. NOTE: The .357 Sig case was designed for 43000 psi and the 10mm for 33000 psi. This translates to a max load of 16.2gr of 2400 in QL. And again, seating depth really changes things. Ammoguide.com has 6 loads for the 9x25 Dillon with 13gr of 2400 listed as a max load so use your own discretion here. This has been a public service announcement ..... and now back to our regular program..... Yes, 1200 ft-lbs of energy may be a bit more than the tiny 115's were designed for. GW's heavy hitters will be fun to see develop, but if I remember, he's doing a true 357, not a wimpy 9mm . That opens up a whole range of weights, 'specially if he jumps up to the .358 ;D I have a .358 blank, but it's spoken for.....

oh yeah I am going .358 it is a Douglass xx blank, the first 16" of which went to a 358 winchester the remainder is rough profiled and sitting here waiting for a purpose, only trouble is I just corresponded with someone who has made a bunch of 357 out of .223 and let me in on the " secret" I might just reconsider the 357 super Cooper, since the twist is not really what I wanted for a subsonic Spectre anyway. I got skunked for caribou on opening day, but this weekend MIGHT be another opportunity, plus I got the Beowulf running and it is a total Hoot.... so I might not get back into the garage till winter truly sets in ( in another 3 weeks )

Aww man, ... no I spent this months allowance on a 247 grain HPcasting mold for a whisper bullet , and some time shooting my 45 blackhawk. Large doses of 296 behind 300 grain bullets is NOT a good bullseye load to be shooting one handed. I am trying to locate a non carbide .357 mag sizer die. and a .350 straight chucking reamer. and I need to spend some time deburring my hammer spur ;-)
