Right now I'm at 13.5gr of Lil Gun with a CCI 450 primer and the cartridge overall length of 1.80. the 70gr Sierra BlitzKing bullet is 0.883" long. I believe there is more space in the case than there would normally be when using the more standard flat nosed pistol bullets but the ogive on the bullet I'm using limits the depth that it can be set in the cartridge case. QL says I can go to 13.9gr on Lil' Gun. I'm working my way up to that load.

I went to the range and put 50 rounds through the 256WM carbine and it shoots really nice. I had to slap a cheapo 4X scope on it because I discovered that, even with my glasses, I could not really see the front sight that well. I was only shooting at 50 yards since I really didn't know what this carbine could do but I could easily shoot under an inch. The picture below is how it went to the range. The rounds feed great from the Pmag but only if I load 5 or less. The short rounds shift in the magazine enough that by the time I get to the 6th round or so they start to miss-feed. I'll need to make a spacer for the front part of the magazine.

I forgot to say I don't like Lil' Gun in my AR -- it's seems to be really dirty. I only shot 50 rounds and when started cleaning the bolt and carrier I had a hard time getting the things apart -- carboned up really bad. I've shot a lot of different powders in the AR and never saw this, and with such a small number of rounds. I think I'm going to try Alliant 2400 like GW said he used. I just need to find some load info -- it doesn't seem to be easy to find.

I also just added some 2400 and Reloader 7 to the stable, along with another jug of Lil'Gun. The data I had written down for the 256 was 11.5 - 12.7max gr of 2400 with a 75 gr bullet.

Thanks for the info on the 2400 -- gives me something to work with. I also just got a note from another fellow that maybe, since I was doing fire-forming loads, that they may have been a hair light and I was getting incomplete burning. I still have a little ways to go with this brass as far as the load level so I'll try going up on the load and see if the carbon continues. I still want to get hte 2400 powder since that's one of the original powders for the original 256 WM.

greywuuf, I've found the max load for my rimless 256WM and wanted to also try Alliant 2400. I believe you said you used it in your 256WM Contender and was wondering what load you were using -- it would give me something to work with. I can't seem to find any good info on the internet about using 2400 -- I even contacted Alliant and they said they had no load info for the 256WM.

ok still can't lay my hands on my own load Data, but I have the loose leaf fourth edition load books for the contender, published july 97
acording to hodgdon powderrs they list 60 bullet 14.0 start max 15.0 of 2400 75 grian bullet ( unspecified) 12.0 to 13.0 of herc 2400 and 87 grain they say 11 to 12 of 2400
from a 10 inch barrel they report those loads to go about 2236-2360 for the 60 grn 1890 -2027 for the 75 and 1748 - 1965 for the 87. no pressures are listed
they also show a max case length of 1.281 and a rim thickness of.060 then neck shown is .206

Any word on load development? The only load I have right now is for fire-formed brass and it's 13.9 grains of Lil' Gun, CCI 450 primer, Sierra 70gr blitzKing bullet with a COL of 1.85". I've done 14.0gr of Lil'Gun but the firing pin dent is just starting to get smaller at that point so I figured I'd stay with 13.9gr. I found a place to buy Alliant 2400 but I need to go through fire-forming a ton of brass I've made up before I start messing with another powder. I appreciate your 2400 load info you gave me -- gives me something to work with when the that time comes along. I posted over on "Quarterbore.com" that I was looking for a bullet with a profile similar to the Sierra BlitzKing but something like 60 grains. I was even thinking about getting some Barnes 25 caliber TSX bullets that are solid copper and shortening some to see what I get. I'm just not sure I can shorten them accurately -- and they ain't cheap.

Have you considered some of the soft point bullets available? With the small diameter and bottle neck case they might feed ok and without the point you might actually have a shorter bullet per weight....possibly highervelocity. I know both the 60 grn. and 87 grain would shoot well from my contender.

I know both the 60 grn. and 87 grain would shoot well from my contender. The only soft point bullets that I know of, that are lighter than the 70gr Blitzking, are the flat nosed ones and I'm not too sure how well they would feed in an AR. I guess, when all else fails, I should just go buy some of those 60 grain flat nosed bullets and try them. Might be able to get 2400 or maybe even 2500fps out of those pills.

I got the carbine to the 50 yard range today. I was really Hot and Humid with no breeze so I decided to just shoot the brass that needed fire-forming. The target below is 15 rounds shot fairly quickly with an already hot barrel. The really wide flyer was my not paying attention. The others may have been the brass not being fire formed or me not doing my job. I like shooting this little carbine and it runs like a Singer sewing maching. Maybe some time down the road I'll actually get a chance to shoot some ammo with formed brass.
