Finally started a 45 Win Mag for the AR. I had an AR Performance Bolt & Extension set up that has a 308 bolt face and finally started a barrel. Now to get my brass and stuff from the other shop and see what this will do.
QL says it will push a 230 FP to 1900 fps and it will fit in the M1 Carbine mag set ups. Might have to adjust the follower a bit. I think its going to be one of those 256 Win Mag type things..... yea it works, but who wants one.
Of course, using 308 brass cut to size, this could stretch out a bit.... Using Quick Design into Quick Load, a 1.600" case length will push a 230gr FMJ past 2300 fps in a 16" barrel.
Then the question will be what caliber: .451, .452, or .458...….

Now the big question -- you have a .308 bolt and extension from AR Performance, will it fit in a standard AR upper receiver. I was wondering about the diameter of the extension and bolt. Do you know what pressure they are rated for -- the 45 Winchester Magnum would be nice but there could be other possibilities also. What barrel length were you thinking about trying? I know this is not part of this project but have you thought about something a little different -- like the .308 1.5 inch Barnes? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.308%C3%971.5-inch_Barnes

The Win Mag is rated for 40ksi. I don't remember what ARP said the bolts were good for. I bought a few of their "Super bolts" for our 35 ARem conversions. The ARP extensions are made to work with std AR uppers.
We'll do a std 45 Win Mag and see how it goes. Then look at stretching it out.

Fresh from the bench. Hope to test this weekend.... I had a DPMS High Rider upper that I opened up for a 50cal BP upper that seemed appropriate for the WM For reference: 45 Acp, 45 Win Mag 230gr FMJ (28gr Lil Gun), 357 ARMag Poly may does not grip rounds as nice as the 357s and 10's, so might work over the metal mag a bit

Hey All, Tested the 45 WinMag at the local indoor range Saturday..... Lets just say we got everyones attention! I only fired two rounds to see if it would go Bang and it sure did...
I need to polish up the chamber and work on the chamfer a bit to help loading. This thing reminds me of the 450 Bushmaster I built for my Dad, what a monster. Working on a magazine package I my spare time. Need to find a source for bolts as ARP doesn't carry them any more....
Hopefully I can get caught up and play with this one a bit...

Another test session at the range with the 45 Win Mag..... I need to chrono this thing, it is a cannon...
Had a gas ring on the bolt come out and jam so it cut the session short. Going to de-tune the loads a bit and find a 450 Bushmaster magazine to see if we can get it to feed better single feed instead of regular AR mag.

Hey All, Another good session at the range! Weather was hot, but no rain during the day. Loaded up two loads for the 45 Win Mag, the std Sierra 230gr FMJ and their 300gr Deep Curl. Std OAL is 1.575 but the 230 gr can be loaded out a bit. We tried that with the 300gr, but hit the lands at 1.62" so we had to push them down at bit at the range. We ran 4 different mags; two of our 45WM (modified M1 Carbine-AR mags) and two standard AR mags. All rounds fed with a few needing an extra push. I'll install a heavier buffer for next round. The 230's hit 1900 fps and the 300's hit 1700 fps altho pushing the bullets down enough to get them to chamber raised pressures a wee bit too much... Next plan is to load up some more 300's and 250 FN or HP and do some paper punching to see where this thing groups with the 1:16 twist barrel compared with the 450 BM 1:24 barrels.

More function testing with a Heavy buffer so we can definitely tune the gas system down. Did a brake for a Beowulf last week so cut the same 11/16-24 thread on the 45 Win Mag and doing some brake testing. If I get a chance I'll turn out another variant for comparison.
