Put a 1:12 twist tcm carbine barrel in the lathe today while I'm back for a few days.

has anyone built an AR in .22TCM, or .22RE with a piston system? I have a 22RE with a pistol gas system that I converted to a piston system for a short time. The piston system was (I believe) an Adams Arms pistol length piston system I bought for a really good price some years ago. I decided I didn't like it because it seemed too sensitive to loads for different weight bullets -- more sensitive than the DI system so I sold the piston system. There is really such a small powder charge for the bullets in the 22RE I was using that I guess the change in gas pressure was enough to cause the piston system to short cycle on some loads. The piston system only had three settings -- full, partial and off. Maybe the newer systems might work better but for me adding the cost of a piston system to a setup that worked fine as a DI was not worth it. You may be looking for a suppressed setup and I would bet it would work nice with the back pressure but for me the 22RE was just a Varmint rifle.

I've beem layed up in the hospital for a while -- nothing I can't handle but it screwed up my chances of getting to the range. I won't be getting there till the first of the year to test my 22 TCM carbine again and a nice little 300 Blackout carbine with a 1:12 twist barrel. I only shoot supersonic so there is no point in having the fast twist although I do have a second carbine with the 1:7 twist. The 22 TCM shoots the commercial ammo just fine because the factory actually loads them hotter than I can hand load them so the action works great. I did open the gas port a hair to 0.096" only because that's what's on my 22 Reed Express and I wanted the two carbines set up the same way. The only problem I've had with the commercial ammo is the lead nose on the bullets are easily deformed if they don't feed just right -- wish they would go to something like the Hornady 35gr V-max that feeds great and can be loaded easily to the correct factory length.
Somebody had asked either here or on another site about using the PPS-43 mags and I can say they work really great but I use a 15 round cut down version so I don't know if a full length PPS mag would work with the 22 TCM. I have another straight 7.62X25 mag (CZ-24) that I may try but it takes a little work to make it fit and a special magwell adapter -- but that something to try later.
I will say that if you reload try to get the factory 22 TCM brass since it's almost perfect for reload without having to do any case trimming or neck turning like some of the reformed .223 brass that is sold to replace the factory brass. I got two different packs of reformed .223 brass and one needed like everything done to make it right the other pack just needed the necks turned. Also, The case volume on the factory 22 TCM is a bit more than reformed .223 brass cases so a little more powder can be added.

Best Wishes 22, hope things get well soon. I 2nd 22's comments on the brass, for ease of use. The only comment that I will share is that the brass is a bit soft, so pick your poison as they say. Re-working .223 stuff is a pain. On a positive note, we are ordering blanks for a full production run of 22 TCM barrels for the AR. We have had a lot of things going on behind the scenes for quite some time and my schedule has not helped, but things are looking up and hopefully we can report a bit more very soon. For the 22 TCM barrels we will set up "stock" as 16" sport bull profile with options from there and hope to have a special price on the first run. So I've got a lot to get set up in the mean time and will definitely try to keep up with this forum much better!

Tim, The 16" barrel I got from you shoots like a champ. I'm mainly using a PPS-43 mag shortened to 10 rounds and at this time plan on only using the light bullets from Barnes, Hornady and those inexpensive Dog Town bullets when I can find them. If you have any idea what powder the factory is using please let us know. I've gone to my old standby Lil' Gun at 11.5 grains and although I have not run them through my Chrony (too lazy) the factory rounds seem more energetic although not as accurate.

New guy stepping in. Very interested in this project, I have a friend who wants a 22TCM bolt rifle but doesn't have confidence in what is currently available. Personally I am working on a 221 Remington Fireball AR. I have two bolt rifles in 221 fireball one custom on a Rem 700 chassis and a factory CZ 527.
Have a great Christmas and keep us in the loop, Paul

Hey Paul, Merry Christmas! Yes, the .221 is pretty cool. Last one I did was a 1:7 twist for super long bullets at slower speeds. Also did one in 7mm as a 7mm Fireball. The TCM is also pretty cool. We are trying to get some mag options but its been going slow.... Welcome to the forum

Just pulled into the shop and firing things up, well, the heat anyway. Not bad up here, 36 deg and no snow! Got blanks in the truck and will start unpacking in the morning. Got 1:12 and 1:14 twist barrels to try so hopefully we'll get some stuff knocked out between phone calls.
