This was the 2nd AR I ever got. Got the upper and then the lower used off of EE on arfcom a few years back. This is the 7.62x39 Colt Match Target Ban Model ( In 7.62x39? Yes, 7.62x39) that I use for testing fit on adapters as it is very tight. This rifle both surprised and ticked me off. Feeding is (was) very unreliable, but the accuracy is outstanding. Wolf steel cased shoots well under 1" at 100 yds. But with the feeding issues I just set it up on the shelf as I didn't have much time or patience to work on it. While I have the 6.8 SPC down for maintenance, I put the x39 back on and again, this thing is dead on. With all the conversion work we've done since then I look at feeding totally different now and have a variety of mags to work with. Last outing had 1 FTF but that was using some neck sized cases. Got some Speer 110gr Varminter HP bullets to try out along with my stash of Sierra 125 Spitzers. Twist is 1:12 on the barrel and the sub loads I've tried just don't cut it. These little guys tho.... Looking fwd to some development and chrono work.

Loaded up some of the new Speer 110gr HP Varminters with 25.2 gr of IMR 4227. Shoots one hole groups at 50 yds when I do my part. Weather was bad so didn't get the chrono out. QL calculated just over 2400 fps.

Pleased to announce that the Speer 110gr Varminters in the 7.62x39 get the job done on Whitetails. The wife filled her doe tag yesterday and the 110's did an incredible job, one shot, dropped in its tracks. A perfectly placed shot behind the shoulder at 120 yds didn't hurt either. The autopsy showed an exit wound but it was different from "conventional" heavy bullets. You could tell the Varminter did what it was supposed to do, expand on impact. The entry wound was much larger than the exit wound which indicates that most of the energy was expended on entry. The exit wound showed the core of the bullet remained in tact with enough energy to exit, but not so much that it blew things apart. Compared with a typical 30-30 150gr SP which deforms a bit on entry, expands, and blows right through on exit, (or the 150gr 308 which magnifies things a bit ) the 110 Varminter did the opposite, in this case. More study is going to be needed so we'll be out looking for volunteers One thing that is happening is a paradigm shift in my thinking. My dad is a "bigger bullet" guy, so that's what I grew up on. For years, the only gun I used was a Model 94 30-30 with 180 gr bullets. I bought it brand new for $67.00 at a department store. It was the only rifle I used for 20 years but it was also very effective. Adding a 2x pistol scope mounted forward on the receiver, I had a light, quick, Swamp Scout rifle. It wasn't until I actually won a Browning BLR in 308 that I changed deer rifles, but the only change I made was dropping to a 150gr SP bullet. Again, very effective. Since I have been playing with the AR's, the lighter bullets have proven very effective, 85gr .257, dropped in its tracks; 115gr 6.8, dropped in its tracks; 110gr x39, dropped in its tracks; 334gr JPH 50 Beo, dropped in its tracks. (Had to throw that one in Yep, looks like more study is needed....... I wonder if they have Grants for things like this? Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Hope you and your wife had a good Thanksgiving. Sounds like the two of you hunt well together. I was wondering if you cured that 7.62X39 feeding problem with that Colt AR you have and if so -- what did you do?

Yep, good team. I cover the bench, run ext cord and go to work. She puts the rifle on the bag, plugs in coffee pot and heater, waits for Bambo to come by, then shoots like Annie Oakley! ;D
