I like small cartridges because they are easy to handle and inexpensive to reload. I have one AR in the 5.7X28 that is gas operated -- not that AR57 blowback version. This new wildcat is necked down to 17 caliber from the factory 18 caliber (4.6X30 HK round) so the reforming is super easy. I have a gas operated upper for this round and it uses the same FN 20 round pistol magazine I use for the 5.7X28 setup. This is a picture of the round (17X30) in the middle with a 17HMR on the left and a 7.62X25 Tok on the right. The 17X30 is very close to the little 17 velociraptor round which is made by necking down the 5.7X28 cartridge case. The 17X30 can be run hotter and is capable of velocities of 3700fps with a 17 grain V-max bullet. It can go faster but then the brass life is shortened. Brass is a bit hard to get but it is available and maybe it will get easier to find in the future. This is one of my little hobbies.

Got a chance to pop a target with the new little round. It took me 5 rounds to sight it in because the holes are so small then I put 5 rounds into the target for grouping. This is 5 shots with one being called a flyer. The dime will cover all including the flyer. This is my rifle -- nothing fancy but it shoots nice. I could load this round hotter but right now I'm at 10.0 gr's of 1680 under a 17 gr V-Max bullet and a CCI 450 primer. It's like a reloadable super 17 HMR. Charlie

Nice job Charlie! How is the recoil?

I would guess it would compare to the recoil of a 22 magnum or 17 hmr. You can feel something but not enough action to cause you to lose sight of the impact on the target. I had only fired 5 rounds to sight the rifle in and another 5 rounds for accuracy. It shot so well I figured why waist good ammo and I had another rifle to test -- a 17 mach2 that also shoots really good.
I was going to change the handguards out to a free float setup but I got a little nervous about pulling the rifle apart to change the handguards and screwing something up.

Yes, I believe the cartridge case is rated up around 58,000psi. The little 17gr V-max Hornady bullets are something I lucked into since they are not for sale on the commercial market. Hornady said the little bullets were not designed to go faster than someting like 3200fps so I don't want to drive them too hard right now -- plus they shoot great right where I have them loaded at. A big plus with the load I have is the brass should last a good long time.
