Crowkiller, here is the Tokarev info for the AR. I have always used .308 barrels. (Ruger did the same thing with the 762x39). I have seen some retro fitted SKS / AK barrel on the Tok, but have never made one. If I remember, in the Ammo page, we did some bullet measurements on different ammo and I think they were all in the .308 - 309 range but I would have to go back and look.

A while back, I had Ron Williams build me a complete upper. I supplied about half the parts from my spares pile,(slick upper, gas block, floating hand guard, BCG) and had him assemble it and mod a few PPS-43 magazines. Ron is local to me, so I drove over (30 miles) and picked it up. Test fired it on his backyard range. Runs like a train, 2.5" @ 100 Yd. with spam can ammo. Some of my hand loads are a bit better. Very satisfied customer.
Ron was very accommodating and easy to do business with and product is , I feel, better than advertised.

Built a couple of Tok pistol uppers and needed to reload some more test ammo.... lo and oh crap, I can't find my dies..... I mean, I've only moved 3 times since I've loaded up Tok rounds... So I ordered a new set from Midway and ran all my Starline brass through the new sizing die.
I started doing Tok barrels with a home made reamer and go gauge. I finally got a "real" reamer and go gauge, and the next three barrels were all chambered too deep....(no, I didn't check, I just ran the three barrels..) That was all back in the day of the cheap surplus ammo and the Tokarev was the flavor of the day.
Since then, I've gone back to my original go gauge and things were good. Fast forward to 250 rounds of newly sized brass with new Lee dies...…
One of the builds I did for a guy out West. I did his right after two of my own stock brls and cut his chamber tight as the last barrel I did had some high numbers with factory PPU brass, so I tightened things up. He said he was getting some failures to eject unfired rounds and was getting some short cycling. He packed it up and sent it back and said he was using new PPU Defense ammo. I went through the upper and tried out my stash of reloads and things were fine. Got some new PPU Defense ammo and got short cycles. Dropped in my light/light set up and action cycled and locked back. Don't have a spot for my chrono, but just seat of the pants, this Defense stuff is on the light side..... Then I tried some of my new reloads and got the same failure to eject when manually cycling.... WTH?
It was time to pull the barrel and check the numbers:
The PPU defense was .005" shorter than my chamber gauge.
The newly sized Starline brass in the new Lee dies was .011" shorter than my chamber gauge!~!! WTH is going on here. I got my two other barrels: one with a "stock" chamber and one with a "undersize" chamber. The stock chamber was on the ragged edge of being too deep for the new starline reloads, but would reject manually. The short chamber cycled all rounds.
Wondering why the customer's barrel would eject unfired rounds, but a deeper chamber would, I pulled his bolt and found the bolt face was on the short size and the extractor was on the short side: this closed up the gap between the bolt face and the extractor claw just enough that the short rounds wouldn't slip past the claw. Worked things over and upper hand cycles just fine. Now to do something about the low powered "Defense" ammo.....
...and tighten up my chambers some more! again...

Looks like a couple of gremlins got you. I have bought and made adjustable gas blocks for my DI setups. It sure does help solve the over gas problems, makes things real nice with a can. But on the TOK I think is a blowback? I don't know, change springs?

Hey Paul, No, our Toks are all DI and we built a line of custom adjustable blocks just for the Tok Length gas system. Issue isn't gas, its the dang brass is getting shorter!

I'm wondering about the light loads, you should be able to compensate for a light loading.

new to forum. A Tok setup on an AR has always fascinated me.
Have been corresponding with HMC710 and am searching the couch cushions to get one.
I have a modest pile of Tok milsurp, plus some modern PPU ball. If I need more brass I'll get either more PPU ball, or Starline brass.
I want to fire milsurp, handloads bearing Hornady .309 XTP, or handloads of Moscow Match going as high as 150gr. This may justify me waiting for a can.
HMC710 says a barrel throated for milsurp will work with bullets that heavy, but one mag won't work across that range of OALs. A 16" barrel of modest contour would be just great, I assume with muzzle threads of 5/8-24 and outer diameter of .750 as far back as a pistol-length gas tube will go.
If I understand correctly, I'll need the barrel with stock throat, bolt, gas system (I'll find an adjustable block) and two series of mags, one for milsurp and .309 handloads, and the other for Moscow Match.
What does that bill of materials look like?

You will need the following parts:
Barrel Gas System (you can make your own, just a pita) Tok Bolt (some use 5.45x39 bolts) Magazine feed system
Send me an email to tim@thearguy and I can get you pricing on all of the above

H:
what length gas tube do you recommend?
will "pistol" length work on a 16"? Would like to do this with off-the-shelf parts if possible.
Haven't quit on this, it's just back-burnered.

Sorry, it takes custom length gas system and bolt as stated in previous post...
