Bench Rest season is over here in Michigan so Bro needed something to do after he finished oiling all his bolt pouches. We built 2 6PPC's, an S (shooter) and an M (Match) Here is the S when I first did it about a year ago and never shot. Bro didn't like the twist rate of the S barrel so he cut his barrel with his custom reamer. The S has a barrel that I got off the EE a couple years ago and never did anything with. Going to be interesting to see how they compare. I took the PRS off the S and put it on the M the other day when we finished it. The M has a DPMS High Rider receiver and is not gas operated. Let the games begin

Trying to light a fire under Bro to get this done. Want to see how it compares to our 6x45 and 250SS data.

Update 11/30/10: Deer season ends today and Bro got his arse kicked with his XP shooting golf balls at 200 yards. So, now he has motivation to get the 6PPC running. As soon as he gets done going over the XP he promises he will prep brass for the 6PPC because he wants to try it out next week.

After being schooled on barrel cleaning I thought we were ready to do some loading..... Bro got out the micro sizer and explained why we needed to bump the shoulder back about a thou. Once cases chambered to his satisfaction he got out the micro seater and we started to seat different bullets to see where our thoat and bullet base was. The 95 gr Sierra BT match bullets seated a little too deep, but the 100gr SP were right where he wanted. He is working up a load of N133 at different seating depths for testing.

Some things have changed since my last post: Bro decided to use AA 2230 powder for a few reasons: 1. It was the go to powder in BR shooting; 2. He had 8 lbs of it; and 3. It WAS the go to powder in BR shooting and he had 8 lbs of it. The load was Sierra 100 gr SP, 23.5 gr of AA2230 and OAL of 2.185", just off the lands. (Tried 10 loaded to 2.195" and they did not chamber easy). QL said 2348 fps at 40.1ksi pressure. Bro called me on the road Saturday and said the gun was ready to go and I could pick it up and see if it went bang. I called him when I got back into town and he was on his way to The River (not the casino, the hunt shack) because he had to find out if it went bang. A Weaver 10x scope was pulled from his closet for test glass and sand bags front and rear were used. It went bang and Bro dialed the Weaver in at his 80 yard target. My first 2 shot group was touching 1/2" high at 1:00, 2 clicks on the Weaver and my next three shots were 2 in the same hole and the third touching at the outside edge. I was impressed. The mag was an off brand 7.62x39 that never worked in my Colt so we loaded rounds one at a time. The stock trigger was long and creepy. The only problem I had was I didn't grab the camera or the chronograph. We took turns burning through the 40 rounds and Bro finally said it didn't shoot bad "It will kill a crow". Summary: 6PPC, 23.5 gr AA2230, Sierra 100 gr SP, ? 20" barrel 1:12 1:10 twist, ? chamber, ? round count, first test load, easy 1/2" groups at 80 yards with many touching and a bunch of hole in holes. After 5000 rounds of Tok and 9mm, I am very happy. Bro? "OK, it goes bang, now lets stop screwing around and get the real one out." He was smiling tho... Next move: Bro is going to re- crown the barrel and I am going to measure the gas port and see if I can tone it down a bit. Then I'll call JD and see if we can come out to his 200 yd range. Rock on man, rock on! edit for twist

Bro re-crowned the barrel yesterday. Gas port is .103" dia I decided to make an adjustable gas block instead of plugging and drilling the port or putting in an orifice. Bro also doesn't like the way his brass is getting beat up so now we can just turn the gas off if we want. I pulled the trigger group out, re-ground the sear angle and shortened the travel. A little adjustment on the disconnecter and the trigger is back in. I bent the legs of the hammer spring and pull is still heavy, but much shorter and smoother. I put the upper together last night and Bro is going to clean it up this morning during coffee. He's got some more loads together and said he's going out today to test them out. Told him to bring me a target back!

Bro called last night (after happy hour) complaining of the 100gr bullets, neck tension, fliers, and no crows. Said the 6 wants to shoot the 90 gr Sierra FMJBT but he would get one a quarter inch out and when he checked that case, there was too much neck tension. "We need a reamer, I'm not turning necks for an AR!" Hopefully I'll get the clutch in the truck today and can go shoot too. And complain about...........

The 6PPC Shooter has been turned over to me for the rest of the development stage. The Match is being cleaned up for case prep and testing. The 1:10 twist of the Shooter does not sit well w/Bro because the bullets seat too deep for his liking. Now we'll see if I can get the gas system tuned in and a mag that will function good with the PPC case.

Delivered the 6 PPC Match to Bro last night. (And helped him finish off his Super Bowl leftovers ) He's got brass prepped up and will start loading up his BR rounds. He is a big fan of the 68 gr super special 6mm bullets so we'll see how the two rifles compare, as soon as we can get to the shooting range.....

Taking the Match gun down to Holton for the Bench Rest Nationals this weekend. Trying out the new Hogan drop in trigger that we got from Love2Shoot. Very nice trigger and can't wait to put it in action.
