Got the new 257 ARS dies from Lee the other day. Cleaned up some once fired x39 brass and ran them through. One pass and a neck clean up and ready to fire form. Formed a few up and compared them to the original 250SS round. You can see the 250SS on the far right with its base bulged a bit. The neck taper is just a bit steeper on the ARS compared to the SS. And the bulge at the bottom is gone! L-R: x39 once fired; Sized x39 case; fire formed 257ARS; Sized 257ARS; 257ARS; 250SS New fired rounds just let a bullet slip back in so the Manson Reamer chamber and the Lee Custom Dies worked well. The bullet is a Hornady 100gr SP and the length is about perfect. Loaded fire form loads to 2.200" and they chambered nice. Don't have enough time to load for accuracy as I have a couple uppers to get out while I'm home But, all the parts are here and things are looking good so far ;D Looking forward to seeing what range of bullets this thing likes and go from there.

Did a little reloading with the 87 gr bullets, but getting pretty dark up here early so didn't do any chrono work. Will keep you posted.

Fire formed some cases with a load of 20gr of 4227 with both 87gr and 17 gr bullets. Pulled the red dot off the upper and put my Weaver T-6 on it. Man are those some fine cross hairs .... yikes Ran three rounds of the 87 gr on a clean barrel at my 50 yd bench. The stuff on the left of center is fire form loads with the red dot. That is the 3 shot group in the upper right quad just left of the inner white square. My point of aim was the 3:00 right corner of the center diamond. Then I fired 3 shots of the 117's which you can see at the 6:00 posiiton of the upper right quad at the bottom of the square. I saw the first one go in just above point of aim. Fired the next one, same hole. Hmm might have something here. Fired the 3rd one... Same hole! Wooo Hooo, or so I thought....... Went to look at the target and saw the tumbled hole at 12:30 on upper right square. OK, was that there before? 1:14 twist rate remember.... Fired 3 more rounds of the 117's Yep, tumbling all the way. No problem as the base of the bullet was well into the case body anyway... Fired my last two rounds of the 87's... Nothing to write home about but we are still on a new barrel and fire forming cases... Brought the upper in to the shop and going to install the gas block, inspect the chamber, and mount it on my target lower with the Hogan trigger. Hope to get some chrono work in tomorrow weather and time permitting.

Had some fire form loads with 19gr of 4227 and had the crono out. 2645 avg velocity with 40 fps spread Definately opened up compared with the 20 gr load. Then I tried some 75gr JHP with 20gr of 4227 4 shot group 2804 fps max - still fire forming cases. Target moved after 4th shot so didn't want to throw another one at it. QL shows lower velocity by at least 100fps so need to check my notes and powder measure. With the 75 gr bullet I seated to two depths, the 87gr length and down to the base of the neck. At the 87 gr length, not too much holding it in..... QL predicts 2834 fps with 23.4 gr of 4227 based on 50ksi pressure. Next move is to switch to a slower powder to get 100% case capacity and QL is showing close to 3000 fps with the 75gr Hornady and 3031 powder. Now that's knocking on the 250 Savage's door!

Got the 1:10 twist blank in and centered. Will get this one profiled and chambered and see what the heavy bullets will do. Remember, deer season is coming ;D

Ran some fire form loads through the 257 this weekend and hope to get more brass worked up. Haven't put a gas port in the new barrel yet so just single shot for the time being. Upper has been sitting for months so was time to throw some lead.

Well its only been 18 months..... Loaded up some of the 87 gr Hornady SP starting with 28.5 gr of H322 going up to 29.5gr. Velocity avg for three shot groups were: 28.5 = 2885 fps 29.0 = 2950 fps 29.5 = 3003 fps
Groups were acceptable with two holes touching and a flier avg 1" at 100 yds. I got pics on the phone but way to large to download. Will try and work at getting them posted as well as some load development.

H322 and the 87 gr hit 3030 fps. I wanted to see what some heavier bullets would do so I got out the Sierra 100 gr spbt. 4895 would be a good powder but I didnt have any but I did have some AR Comp powder so ran QL using Varget as data. Using a 50ksi ceiling I loaded up 3 rounds of 28.2 and 3 of 28.7gr. Chrono for the 28.2 loads avg 2780 fps and the 28.7 loads avg 2825 fps. Recoil and report were softer and smoother than the H322 loads, a noticable differance. I had just made some changes at the range and the bench is now at 165 yards. First target was a 4" horz and 1/2" vert spread using just a front bag. Point of impact was 3" higher than at 100 yds so i ran 12 clicks down on the Burris 2x7. Next 3 rounds had the same spread across the X ring. Ill work on getting the bench set up better and input the data into quick target to see what the trajectory says

Tried some slower powders, ARComp, and some old W748 I had sitting around. I also loaded up some 100 gr Sierras to see what they would do. Neither powder matched the performance of the H322. I also need to get a rear bag set up so i can hold better and knock down my horz movement. Next Ill go back to H322 and try some H335 and see how those loads do at the new 165 yd line. Finally got the gas port drilled and its almost big enough. Had two short cycles out of 9 rounds so we'll work on that. Heading back to ghe shop and have another .257 blank so will get another barrel done.

Have a bunch of pics on the phone so I'll see if I can add some to the posts and see what we're dealing with. Going to clean up the two old barrels and do another one to put in the test mix!
