IL2S, Funny you use the windex -- is it with ammonia D? I had said some time ago on ARFCOM that I used it but was told it didn't work and there was no reason why it should. Looking over in a Thread about the 5.45X39 round there was a recommendation to use a mixture of 1/3 water, 1/3 white vinegar and 1/3 ammonia -- kinda like Windex. Then the very next post said he used Windex and it worked great. Mixing the water, vinegar and ammonia might be a cheaper way to do it but the windex is always in my house. I felt kinda stupid at the time, being told the Windex thing was bull, but I felt better about it after seeing that ARFCOM thread about the 5.45X39.

22Boomer - yes we have piston carriers and no our pistons do not fit under regular handguards right now. I am going to try and make some new pistons today, but have a bunch of other things to get done first.

I know there are a couple brl makers out there that say to use windex to clean your new brl when breaking it in. The water and ammonia break down the corrosive elements. Somebody on some post had all the chemical reactions listed out.....

22Boomer - yes we have piston carriers and no our pistons do not fit under regular handguards right now. I am going to try and make some new pistons today, but have a bunch of other things to get done first. The reason I asked was I have been thinking about building a version of the piston setup. I just don't like the idea of buying a $150 piston carrier and gutting it to make it lighter for pistol type ammo. I did want a setup that would fit under standard carbine or midlength handguards. The reason I wanted to do this is to see which type of system I liked. I do shoot milsurp ammo but I shoot for plinking and blasting and use my blowback setup. My DI setup is more for precision work and playing with hand loads. I would plan on using a piston setup the same way I use my DI setup so I could see which I liked more. forgot to add: The handguards I really like are the Magpul M.O.E. handguards -- light weight and they lock on nice and tight. I haven't measured them yet but I believe they may be a bit taller than even the GI rifle length handguards. I don't know if you can tell by the picture of my DI carbine but you can see they are up there.

Might want to ask IL2S. Maybe we could do a group buy on parts. I get my stuff from CMMG and could do a run of barrels to his specs for the piston set up.

Well I decided to go ahead and order a pistol length piston kit. I'll be using an existing receiver and see how it works. Other than being a piston kit, it will be a little different from Doug's. I can't say it will work but, what the heck, I had to try.

I got the piston kit and installed it on my 22 Reed Express carbine that used a pistol length DI system. After some break-in problems it seems to run fine on both light loads and heavy (hot) loads. The piston setup is under my glacier handguards. it uses a standard carbine buffer and spring. The only light part is the carrier which was left over from the old 7.62X25 Tok setup I had. I'll try to post some pics later -- got to cut the grass. edit to add pics: carbine with top cover in place. carbine with top handguard removed to show piston system. That is a side-charging setup that I use for a couple of uppers. I'm not using the return spring on the piston setup since it seems to cause a binding and it works fine as long as I use the spring bushing as a stop. I just got the piston kit yesturday and put it all together last night. I have around 100 rounds through the setup so far and no problems. I trimmed the top of the gas block to allow it to fit under the handguards.

I want to here how it works on a Tok upper........... I have a barrel with a gas port at the pistol length position on the way but I need to get another piston kit -- I like the setup on the 22 Reed Express upper and don't really want to move it. Funny thing is the light loads that would just work with the 22RE DI setup work really well with the piston rig. If I can't scrape up the money for a second piston kit I may have to just try putting the 22RE back to DI and try the piston kit on the new Tok barrel and see which I like more.

I didn't want to give the brand name because it's different from what Doug is using but since I think it may not be as good as his I'll say it's made by Adams Arms. AA mad it for American Tactical and I got it kinda cheap. it was just a test for me -- I wanted to see what the piston business was all about. I will say they sure are a heck of a lot cleaner! I need to test the 22 Reed Express more because that round can be a bit touchy at times and it seems to work really well in the piston configuration.

I looked into the AA but CMMG was much less expensive - even tho I haven't got a store bought one yet....

I looked into the AA but CMMG was much less expensive - even tho I haven't got a store bought one yet.... This kit cost me $195 shipped. There was a special on shipping that week. It's at this location www.cdnninvestments.com/fcopileregas.htmlI wanted to buy something I could mess with that didn't cost much -- so if I screwed it up I wasn't out a big bag of cash. I just went over to the Adams Arms web site to see what some of the parts cost. Holy Mackerel -- the gas block alone costs more than that whole kit at American Tactical. Let me know when you have that piston kit you've been working on ready to go. I got this AA kit to fit under the handguards but their the big fat glacier handguards and I don't care for them all that much.
